Nine Types of Light

The new TV On the Radio single “Will Do” dropped yesterday on iTunes. I’m a big fan and look forward to their album release on April 12th.

Will Do – TV On the Radio

Cheers.

Keith Schofield Does Cut Copy

I get Cut Copy stuck in my head more than almost anything else because I am constantly hitting up the right-click Cut / right-click Copy (usually accompanied by right-click Paste) while translating and tweaking mailing list databases at my 9 to 5, and it’s just like putting the needle to the phonograph over and over again, every time, without fail.  Any other office denizens have this problem?  For me it’s generally a mash-up of Hearts Collide, Take Me Over and Where I’m Going.

Anyway when I’m not in my office I’m having way too much fun watching this.  Hoping my brain follows the track change.

Happy three-day weekend, fellow poor working slobs!

The King of Limbs

New Radiohead album, everybody. Only eight songs long. I’ve listened to them and I don’t know how I feel yet. Chosenbluth and I were talking about which other album it’s most similar to, and he thinks it has the chill vibe of Amnesiac.

I’ll leave it to you to decide. Here’s the very hypnotic music video to my favorite from the album, “Lotus Flower.” Check it out.

Dirtier Than Porn

Upon browsing the Sasquatch lineup and looking to get into some groups I don’t already know, I came across Skrillex.  It’s fucking cool.  Making me more and more excited about the SasquatchDanceParty2011FuckYeah!

Skrillex – Kill Everybody

P.S. I was just checkin out some Skrillex videos on youtube – someone commented on this song saying “this is so dirty that when my mom walked in the room I quickly switched to porn.”  Ha!

oh hai!

Hey all, lets get right to it shall we?

Maybe it’s cause I’m a girl or maybe I’m just partial to semi-whiny, sort-of sad folkish type music….BUT a good friend recently introduced me to Jessica Lea Mayfield and I can’t get enough.

Call Me

These are, I think, the two most interesting/beautiful songs off her album With Blasphemy so Heartfelt.

12 You’ve Won Me Over

Simple melodies, simple lyrics, but so lovely.

Also, the album cover is an owl painting, which is pretty rad.

(When Your Eyes Are All Painted Sinatra Blue)

Holy crapola, apparently Ellie Goulding covered my favorite ever Bon Iver song?!?!?  I don’t know how I didn’t know about this til just now.

The Wolves

And this ushers in a debate I often find myself in when folks cover really good contemporary songs.  It’s such a different sound from the original, but it’s gorgeous for what it is.  Still, there’s none of that convenient distance of time passed to give such a cover the freshness of, say, (to be apt) Bon Iver covering The Outfield’s “Your Love.”

Your Love (The Outfield Cover)(Live 12_14_08)

Does a song have to be around for a certain amount of time before it’s fair game for covers though?  I think I dig this regardless, mostly because the song is beautiful already and if Goulding wants to give her own lovely twist on it, why not?  I enjoy both.

The Wolves (Act I And II)

WOLVES & BEARS // Episode I: Bears

Back at the beginning of senior year of college I went through a brief phase where I only liked bands with the words “Wolf” or “Bear” in their name.  Hence a short-lived DJ name, DJ Wolves & Bears (alternately DJ Woodland Creatures) as well as some pretty great discoveries abounding in the blogosphere.

One of the first woodland creatures to make me prick up my ears was Bear Hands.  They were pretty much the soundtrack to my senior fall and I almost forgot how fantastically twitchy and catchy they are.  Straight outta Brooklyn by way of Wesleyan, they’ve been around and playing the rounds for a while, and only just recently released Burning Bush Supper Club, their first LP since Golden of over three years ago.  Peep this track from BBSC, it’s perfect classic Bear Hands.

High Society – Bear Hands

What I love most about their music is that it’s equally perfectly suited for jamming via headphones on the Subway AND for jangly jittery dancing alone in your room.  I’d kill to see them live.

A few other gems worth noting:

What A Drag – Bear Hands

Bad Blood – Bear Hands

Golden – Bear Hands

And here’s a solid Pitchfork album review to check out to boot.

OK I’m a little biased, but this is still mad exciting.  There’s nothing better than super-group collabos.

Check out this dude.

I’ve been listening to him all morning. The man can shred.

Barbra Streisand

The disco/soul/house inspired producers A-Trak and Armand Van Helden teamed up last year to become Duck Sauce.  It’s pure awesomeness.  But they’ve only released five songs!  (I think that just means that they’re all extra special.)

The first four tracks came out on the Greatest Hits EP (2009) and are stellar examples of how to perfectly take soul and disco samples, beef them up and spit out sinister, catchy-as-fuck house tracks.  (Of course, they’re not the first to do this, but they’re masters.) Gotta check that out if you don’t already have it.

The most recent single from a few months back – “Barbra Stresiand” – is spot on.  And not only is the sampling and song-structure of the dopest quality, the all-mighty element of humor has been BROUGHT. The melodies were sampled from the Boney M recording “Gotta Go Home,” which was a actually a COVER of Nighttrain’s “Hallo Bimmelbahn” (youtube these songs for quality assurance).  Some people get their panties all up in a wad about this.  Who cares?!  Awesome song.
